WE ARE SO EXCITED! we hope it all works out :)

we've done lots of fun things... you can check out our spelunking trip on the family j's blog. i'm a little proud about it. i rock climbed and stuff and didn't show my fear because i wanted my niece to continue to be the brave little soul she was being. it was awesome!

and... i think i have learned my most important vegas lesson yet.

vegas lesson #814:
whatever you do, DO NOT do what this unfortunate fellow did. now, this didn't happen to me, but i read about it, and you can too:

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER BUMP YOUR CART INTO SOMEONE'S CAR AT A VEGAS WAL-MART

it is very sad. scary, and sad.

well, until next time... you can think of me singing that old roger miller song, england swings.

Christ is born! We are blessed!

So, whether or not or not Christ was born on December 25th (probably not), whether he was born in a manger or a cave, whether there were donkeys and sheep present, His birth and life and death and resurrection are still the GREATEST story ever told! God sent Him to earth, and like it says in the song Hark the Herald Angels Sing, He was "born that man no more may die." This is amazing!

Here are the lyrics to one of my favorite songs that I love to listen to during this season. It is called One Child, and the version I know is by Natalie Grant.

The seed, it grows
and somehow becomes a life
It moves, she knows
that her baby has arrived,
She's so scared, but she's so blessed
She lays down her fear
for the hope at her breast
for she knows...

One million chains could never hold back this moment in time
One thousand dreams could never dream what this moment truly means
Heaven and earth, they cradle the infinite Joy born on this night
For it only takes one Child to forever change the world

He stands beside her,
he'd share her pain
if he only knew how
He whispers 'I love you'
as he gently strokes her brow
He's so scared, but he's so blessed
There's a thundering pride
pounding deep in his chest
For he knows...

Christ is born, we are blessed
Every knee shall bow
and every tongue shall confess
That we know...

This Baby cries
and for the first time
The world hears the voice of God weep
Mary sings a lullaby
As the Hope of the nations
gently falls asleep
She knows this is the one Child
To forever change the world.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://deannaandtom-happilyeverafterinvegas.blogspot.com/2008/12/christ-is-born-we-are-blessed.html' title='Christ is born! i hope you all have a wonderful holiday filled with joy, laughter, family, friends, good food and warm homes. we've got some exciting things planned for our first christmas together:

tom's twizzler straw into my vitamin water. yum.
things started out yesterday when tom brought me my favorite vitamin water (i shared with him, since he shared his favorite strawberry twizzlers with me) on his way home from work for dinner.

during dinner, he told me of his plans to take me to one of my favorite restaurants, mimi's cafe, for breakfast on christmas eve!!

well, we went today, and it was divine! i had some fancy french toast, stuffed with a sweet cream cheese/orange zest mixture and topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and strawberry syrup. it came with four slices of bacon and two eggs, which i chose to have poached (only the best way to eat eggs). tom had a crab and avocado omelette (which was also scrumptious) and his meal came with a fresh-baked honey-bran muffin (the best muffin EVER).

we came home and played our current favorite card game, casino. this game was new to tom, but he has really gotten the hang of it and has won 3 of the last 4 games we played. the tide has turned. it always happens when i teach him a new game! i win all the time at first, and then he gets really good at strategizing, and i never win again... good thing i am not super-competitive! i just enjoy spending time with tom and playing fun games!

he is at work right now, but he will hopefully get off really early tonight, because we are going out to dinner at our favorite thai place with the family j. pin kaow is amazing! eating at two restaurants in one day is very rare and extravagant for us, but tom said it was a special occasion and justified since we will be cooking all day tomorrow!

since the family j did the main course for thanksgiving, tom and i are in charge tomorrow. tom is preparing a standing roast (should be delicious) and i am making creamed new potatoes with peas and one of my favorite desserts, pretzel salad (this is paula deen's version, mine is a little different because i don't use pineapple and i don't mix the cool whip into the cream cheese mixture, but i spread it on top as a separate layer). becky is in charge of a green salad, rolls, and another dessert.

i think she is making a birthday cake for Jesus with the kids. such a fun tradition. we will eat like royalty when we celebrate the birth of our King!

i can't wait to give my nephew tuff his present! we got him two books (he loves books! even at 16 months!) and a little boy's backpack to put them in. see, his sisters got backpacks a while ago from their aunt s, and tuff loves to wear one in particular around the house all the time when i nanny. the problem is, it is patent-leather black with pink ballet slippers on it. not very manly! especially for a boy named tuff. so we got him one that has dinosaurs and skateboards on it. very masculine.

you'll have to wait until a future blog to find out what i got for tom for christmas (and vice versa)!

christmas decorations!

as tom was just explaining to me just now as we ate dinner, today is what he likes to call christmas adam. you know, the day right before christmas eve... ha ha.

here are some pics of our tree and stockings. tom decided to write his name on his stocking in 550 cord after i told him my plan was to glue and glitter it on. i think it turned out pretty well, and i especially like the cam-green flag on it! a.k.a. vegas snow, gingerbread, and homework.

we have been loving our first holiday season together! granted, we get a tad envious when we hear about the white christmas weather back home, although our family and friends back there seem to be growing restless now. there is something just a little strange about getting ready for Christmas in the sunny, kinda warm weather... although, as you may have heard, our area got a little snow last week. where we live, it did not accumulate at all. but nearby, in north las vegas, i think people got some real measurable amount of the fluffy white stuff.

here are some pics of the snow:

this is a view of the mountains that surround the valley we live in. when they have snow on them (currently it has melted off again) they are so beautiful! i took this photo last week while driving to my sister's.

here is Miss M watching the snow fall outside. notice the lack of accumulation.

you can actually see a couple of flakes in this one!

...so, then, what else have we been up to?

well, most weeks i head over to my sister's 2-3 days a week to nanny for her three kids while she is at work (she is a nurse at the base hospital). this experience has been such a blessing in many ways! i am really enjoying getting to know my nieces and nephew so well. before, when i lived in bellingham/vancouver and they lived in spokane/vegas, i would only get to see them every once in a while. usually they were pretty excited to see me, but initially would be shy at first and need to warm up to me before being comfortable.

now, though, we have such a history together! we are building many memories and i will always treasure this time, and i hope they will too. this last week, we built real gingerbread houses together! my sister actually baked the pieces one night. the next day, the kids and i built the house and decorated some sugar cookies, and the day after that we decorated the house and made a gingerbread man land! it was TOO fun! check it out:

aprons? check. candy and icing? check. holiday cheer? check.

i love them.

Mr. T eating the sprinkles he was supposed to decorate the wreath with.

some of their cookie creations. yum yum.

our finished house. it even had a pond and little men all around it. check out my sister's blog for more pictures.

most days tom comes over at some point to say hi to us when i'm nannying. he is still on night shift, which means he works 4pm-midnight. so if i nanny from 7am-5pm, our little visit at the house is the one of our only chances to hang out that day! we usually play on the playground with the kids- they love tom!

tom has been doing really well in an online math course he is taking! this means that he is doing homework a lot! i'm so proud of him and his hard work towards his bachelor's degree, which he is eventually hoping to get in professional aeronautics. this will aide us in our calling to overseas missions. here is a picture of him doing homework.

work it!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://deannaandtom-happilyeverafterinvegas.blogspot.com/2008/12/quick-update-my-next-post-wil-be-all.html' title='quick update! i should've made a double batch because between the 6 adults and 2 kiddos (Miss O and Mr T thought they were delicious! but, picky Miss M missed out because she wouldn't try them- oh well, more for us!!), the tarts were gone about an hour after we got to The Family J's house.

You should check out my sister's blog to see some of the fun we had on Thanksgiving. yay! i mostly like it because it has a simple purpose: to get together, give thanks, appreciate each other AND stuff yourself with delicious food! tom and i are blessed-- not only is it our first thanksgiving together, but even though we live a great distance from our hometown, we have family here to celebrate with! we are going to the family j's house. we are not just free-loading, however:

we are in charge of bringing my dad's famous dressing (so good!), sweet potatoes (i found a recipe that involves brown sugar, pecans and cinnamon) and a dessert.

i decided to make mini pecan tarts for our dessert contribution (also something learned from my pops). they are leeeetle tiny pies of pure goodness. and, they are relatively easy and totally delicious, so i'd encourage you to try them out if you need an easy dessert tomorrow or during the holiday season.

recipe:

Mini Pecan Tarts
from: Deanna's dad

servings: makes 24 mini tarts
prep time: about 20 minutes
bake time: 20-25 minutes
preheat your oven to: 350 degrees

ingredients:

shells:
1/2 cup margarine or butter, slightly softened
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 cup flour

filling:
2 Tbsp. butter, melted
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup pecans, finely chopped
(i bought a bag of nuts pre-chopped, it saved me a load of time!)

directions:

1. cream shell ingredients together. press into mini pie tins. mine are the little cupcake pans that make little pies about 1 sq. in. in size.

2. mix filling ingredients. pour into shells. i just use a spoon to dish it in the shells.

3. bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

4. remove from pan after cooling for 3 minutes.

5. indulge and enjoy!

i will post a pic of my finished product soon! i am the most blessed wife in the world, and tom is amazing! i love him with my whole heart and i thank the LORD for each and every moment.

so, in honor of our 100th day, i got Tom some slippers (which i am testing out right now... shhhh... actually, he said i could after he opened the gift). i already have a trusty pair, they were hand-me-downs from my friend paula (thanks, lady!). i'll put up a pic of the two of us in our slippers soon. we need them because it is getting chilly here in vegas and our base house has cold plastic cafeteria flooring.

it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!.. even on my blog!

i just couldn't wait any longer! i changed my blog layout to a new holiday themed one, for free! this lovely design was made and offered by my cousin's sister-in-law, shannon. you can get one, too, at her website, eightcrazy designs. LOVE it! Thanks, Shannon!

she also happens to be the designer that created our wedding invitations earlier this year. she was fabulous to work with and the results were beautiful, more perfect than i ever imagined. here is my attempt at posting a photo of the finished results- i wanted to black out our middle and last names and i couldn't figure out how to do it on the original computer document without messing the whole thing up so i took a picture and then edited it in the paint program... needless to say, it ends up loking grainy after all of the conversions, not nearly as wonderful as the real deal, but oh well! i wanted to share it anyway. once again, it was created by shannon, of eightcrazy designs (see above link).

p.s. if you look closely, you can see the school-cafeteria flooring we have in our house! i laid the invite on the floor to take the picture. good thing we both have a pair of slippers now (see 100 days! post) cause this floor gets cold!

memories...

wow, it's been a while since my last post! I loved him very dearly. And this picture is just the epitome of him- he always looked stellar, with pressed shirts and bolo ties! This photo of us is from about three years ago, which is unfortunately the last time I saw him not living in a nursing home. He had been in one for 16 months before he died. I feel very blessed that Tom was able to meet him-- twice! Once, in June, we stopped by the nursing home he was staying in. It always seems a little grim in those places, and it hurt my heart to see him look so weak and frail. When I first introduced Tom as my fiance and told him that we would be marrying in August, Grandpa looked at Tom with an amazed expression. "Oh, really?" he said. "Well, Tom, you're getting a good girl. A real good girl. I always thought she'd turn out to be an old maid!" We all burst out laughing at that one- it was just like Grandpa to lighten the mood with his jokes! I'll definitely miss him!

On a completely different note, here are a few things I've been learning while nannying for The Family J, complete with picture diagrams.

#1. When you can't find your almost 3 year old niece anywhere, and you have to bribe her with a snack to get her to make her location known, she is probably in her mom and dad's room, with the door closed. And she is probably not "just cleaning it up," like she hollers to you. She is actually probably doing her own make-up, emo-style. And not only is she applying makeup to highlight her blue eyes, she is also decorating her knees. And putting perfumed lotion on. That's all.

#2. Costco should NEVER have changed the shape of their gallon milk jugs. Even 25 year old college graduates simply cannot pour the dang things without spilling milk everywhere except where they intended it to go. It happens every time, folks, every time. I think it has something to do with the weird slope/dip before the opening. It is most certainly NOT operator error.

P.S. I looked up the weird jugs so I could put a pic of one on here. And I found this. This picture is a LIE. Not as easy at it looks, I promise. I bet you this is an altered photo. It has to be!

The website I found this photo on is called the dieline. And get this, it says that, "apparently consumers may need some re-education about how to most effectively pour from these new jugs... The pouring issue is significant enough that many retailers (including Sam's Club, Costco, and Walmart) are giving demos." Hilarious. GOD, Himself, says so in His word.

well, even being the extremely pro-life person that i am, i too became intrigued with sen. obama about four years ago when he spoke at the democratic national convention. i bought one of his books. it was very interesting, he has a way with words. as a result of the book and MANY other influences in the liberal city i was living in, i found my political views growing more liberal as my time in college grew, although i was still VERY pro-life. i found it almost easy to make my Christian views coincide with the liberal agenda (i've learned, now, that they generally do not!).

about a year ago, when barack obama became more of a national figure, i even considered that he may be a great choice for president! after all, it was hard not to get wrapped up in his eloquence, excitement and "vision."

i even went and saw him speak in portland, and shook his hand! thrilling, indeed...

but something wasn't right... that night, in the convention center, he didn't mention his extreme pro-abortion stance. this last wednesday night at the final debate, he dismissed that he is pro-abortion... because, who would be?

i always knew that my pro-life stance was not in cohorts with his views, but how EXTREMELY and FUNDAMENTALLY different our stances are is made clear in this article. please read if you are at all curious as to what stance senator obama actually takes. click the link below:

Robert George article: this man is a professor at Princeton, you can read on the article about his education and smarts and see that he a legitimate resource.

home sweet home!

we love our house! it's more spacious than we imagined, its got cute old-style character, it's just for own little family, and it has lots of storage (tom is very excited to use one of the bedrooms as a storage room- we didn't get a house with a garage but this very well might be almost as good. he's got his tools, camping/survival gear, surfboards, snowboard, etc. in there). thank you Lord, for the roof above our heads!

i've been on a huge organizing kick (praise Jesus for the energy to do this, and the fact that i actually really like this kind of projects) while tom has been working really hard both inside and out. he discovered we actually have a sprinkler system that looked like it hadn't been used in a long time- but he fixed it and it works!

here are some pics of some of the rooms that are set-up so far...

**notice the aqua tile--it covers the floor and goes halfway up the wall. under normal conditions this would have made me puke a little in my mouth, but no! He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one.20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the opening.22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. 23 "At last!" the man exclaimed."This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called 'woman,' because she was taken from 'man.'" 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one."

so, 19 days till the wedding, which i know will be beautiful and fun and exciting. but more significantly, 19 days until the beginning of our marriage!! the beginning of our life together. a book that we're hoping to read soon is called sacred marriage by christian author and speaker gary thomas. he explores the question: What If God Designed Marriage To Make Us Holy More Than To Make Us Happy? can't wait to dig into this! sidenote: another cool thing about gary thomas is that he, like yours truly, is a western washington university and campus christian fellowship alum.

oh, minor detail: i finished making my bouquet last night and i couldn't be happier with how it turned out! it is made of silk flowers, even though i initially wanted to use all real. i decided to go with silks for my bouquets, the bridesmaids bouquets, the corsages and the boutonnieres for many reasons: i can save mine and display it somewhere in our home as a decoration (i'll make a smaller one to toss at the reception), i can prep them ahead of time, and i don't have to worry that they will be dead or ugly come show time (my cousin, a florist, told me that hydrangeas, the flower i am using for a majority of the things, are iffy in august). i am so glad i decided to go this way!

how can this be?

i really like cold cereal. now, i'm not one of those nuts that is obsessed with it, by any means, but i prefer it over hot cereal and sometimes i eat it at other times than in the morning. in fact, i would venture to say that more often than not you would find me eating cold cereal after 10 a.m. so i think i could classify that as really liking it.

well, imagine my shock and perpetual excitement when i saw what has happened to one of the classics. my absolute favorite cereal of all time, hands down, no kidding, cross my heart, is cracklin' oat bran, which i lovingly refer to as the COBs. but, alas, it is expensive-- even at the commisary! so i reserve it for special occasions and usual go for some honey bunches of oats (HBofOs). i love the stuff- once, when i was visiting my brother and emily in kansas, it was all i could keep down when i had a bout with a nasty stomach flu that hit while watching the movie spanglish (sometimes i think it is interesting-- the details you can recall about getting sick).

well, anyway, enough with the tangents. post (maker of honey bunches of oats) recently came up with the best idea in the recent history of cereal. check this out: honey bunches of oats- just bunches. i couldn't contain my excitement when i saw it and i shouted down the aisle to my sis, who was doing a really good job steering her kids around in an airplane-shaped cart. she was kind of excited too. well, we didn't get them, because, you know, how healthy could that be? i bet you can guess.

today i am watching the kids for the 4th time this week, and i'll watch them again monday-thursday next week. on friday, my sister and her family (from this moment forward i will refer to them as the family j) will be leaving to head up north! conveniently, her husband's family is having some of their own events the week before our wedding, so they are just heading up a little earlier than tom and i. plus, my sister would like to experience the wonder that is the clark county fair (up in WA state) since it has been a few years since she has been what we have come to believe is the best fair ever. i kind of want to go myself but i doubt i'll have time. i loves me some dairy women milkshakes and irish potato sundaes. about two years ago, carm and i went and pretty much all we did was shove our faces. it was gross, and good.

the family j just found out yesterday where their brand new house will be on base. we went and found it (or at least what we thought would be it, as the house number matched their papers but we weren't sure about the street name since the street name signs were yet to be posted). and if it is, in fact, their house, it couldn't be more perfect because there is a playground right in their backyard!! the two girlies, miss m. and miss o., got to play and even shed a few tears when we left. "but we moved!" they cried as they were slowly and reluctantly making their way back to the family j's van. they will actually get to move the week after they get home from the wedding.

the fish dinner turned out magnificently on tuesday! thanks to tom's family for the recipe! tonight, we are having hamburgers. but, these are not your typical burgers. last night i prepped the patties. first i caramelized some finely chopped onions, then i mixed the cooled onions, some bbq sauce, and some bacon bits into the ground beef before forming the patties. tonight tom will grill them up with some chipotle cheddar slices, and we will doctor them up on the buns with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and special sauce. tom is pretty much the master at making special sauces.

also, i'm going to try my hand at making hummus. tom and i have been talking about it for a while, and then, coincidentally, my cousin posted her recipe on her blog. so i stocked up yesterday on some chickpeas, sea salt, evoo and roasted red peppers. i'll let you know how it turns out!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://deannaandtom-happilyeverafterinvegas.blogspot.com/2008/07/friday-is-my-favorite.html' title='friday is my favorite! we've been pretty busy around here. my mom came to visit, we went camping, becky's been working so i've been watching the little ones, and tom has been trying to get used to his new schedule. they've got him working mids, which means he goes to work at midnight and gets off around 8 or 8:30 a.m. poor guy! he is a hard worker though, and he'll get his new schedule worked out. today, he met me at the commissary (what the USAF calls the on base grocery store) when he got off in the morning so that he and i could pick up some supplies for the delicious dinner that we're making for everyone tonight, then he went home to sleep. on the menu:

-grilled salmon with a cajun spice and brown sugar rub
-fresh salad
-sauteed summer squash
-fresh strawberry shortcake or blueberry crumble (i haven't decided which one yet, maybe both if i get some free moments when the kids are napping)

i am hoping to get all caught up on here soon! i have a lot i could write about. i really like the idea of blogging, simply for the fact that it will serve as a journal for this incredible new adventure, and it will allow family and friends a little glimpse of what is going on in our lives. like i said though, it's been a little difficult with all the busyness around here! for instance, the only reason i have a chance to add stuff right now is that the girls are playing dress-up (hilarious, see photo below of chef, miss o and bridesmaid, miss m) and mr. t is eating some graham crackers at the table. we sure have fun! and it has been a wonderful arrangement that has helped out both of our families, since becky is able to work and i am able to help them while adding a little income to what i am still making from my teaching job (i'll get paid through the school district through the end of august!).

one last thing: if you could all be lifting tom and i up in your prayers as we look for a church home down here in vegas we would really appreciate it! we've checked out a couple, about four. we know that the Lord will lead us to where He wants us, a place to serve and be spiritually fed through a Bible believing pastor and church body. we are just asking for discernment, wisdom and opportunity to find that place! he flew into pdx at 10:30 a.m. i was, of course, anxiously awaiting his arrival! we promptly drove to downtown vancouver and picked up a marriage license, met his parents and mine for lunch at an asian buffet, packed up my car and hit the road!

we had tons of fun (and calories-- but they don't count on roadtrips, right?) on our drive, including a stop at the dalles burgerville for a fresh strawberry milkshake and some really beautiful oregonian scenery. we rolled into boise at about 12:00 a.m. my sweet grandma was still up and waiting for us! we chatted for a bit before our heads hit the pillows- me in the guest room and tom on the couch in the living room (he's a real trooper!).

on saturday morning, we met my aunt at IHOP and then visited my grandpa jerry at his nursing home. he was really excited to see us- he made sure to tell tom that i am a "real, real nice girl." he also shared that he was surprised i'd be getting married and that he thought for sure i'd become an old maid!

we left boise about 9 a.m. in twin falls, id, we stumbled upon some base jumpers that invited us to come up the bridge with them so we could be real close when they jumped into the great abyss that is the snake river canyon. they both jumped succesfully, and it looked kind of fun. kind of. this photo is from the side of the canyon where they were jumping.

although it was a really long drive, we saw beautiful things (the picture to the right is from northern nevada) and had fun spending some quality time together. not only was the scenery magnificent, but it was fun finding random radio stations and also reading some of God's word (have you checked out Colossians lately?) and also some of oswald chambers' "my utmost for His highest." read it!

we arrived in vegas at about 9 p.m. my nieces and brother-in-law were waiting on their front steps with bowls of homemade caramel popcorn! they were very excited to see us and welcoming their new roomie, since i will be living here until the wedding.

we've been having a great time-- we went to church and dinner with some of tom's friends on sunday. we've been running lots of errands and getting some marriage things done, like figuring out car insurance and bank accounts.

i love being here with tom and feel so incredibly blessed to be going on this new adventure. how awesome is it to think that in my wildest dreams i never imagined i'd be living in vegas getting ready to be married to the man that God created me for, but God knew and his plans are always better than we could ever even begin to hope for.
